Sand Point was officially settled in The Lynde and Hough Company of San Francisco set up a supply station and cod fishing station on Humboldt Harbor. The town that grew up around this station adopted the name Sand Point. Aleuts from surrounding villages and Scandinavian fishermen were the first residents of the community. Humboldt County's tidelands, bays, and estuaries have unique and diverse management needs. The Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District was created in to address these needs. The District oversees planned development of the harbors and ports within its boundaries, as well as protection of the natural resources located here. Sand Point's boat harbor is sheltered behind a breakwater at the mouth of Humboldt Slough. In addition to serving local vessels, our harbor provides transient moorage for vessels in the area for the cape fisheries, and for boats in from the Bering Sea for the holidays. Sand Point Sand Point; population 1, is located on Humboldt Harbor on Popof Island off the Alaska Peninsula. Sand Point is home to the largest fishing fleet in the Aleutian Chain. The Island was rather flat and treeless and a large quarry by the ferry dock had supplied rock to build a new runway and large breakwater.
